Sue Taves blends a unique combination of movement and grace in each of her sculptures. Her background as a physical therapist and her lifelong love of nature combine to provide constant sources of inspiration.
After graduating from Northwestern University in Chicago and working as a PT for several years, Sue moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1990. This dramatic change of environment allowed Sue to focus on her true passion: art.
Sue enrolled in a series of sculpture classes that introduced her to different techniques and materials. In 1993, she was transformed by the experience of carving her first stone. The experience of expressing movement in a medium so strong and rich was irresistible.
In 1995 Sue transitioned from full-time to part-time work as a therapist to devote more time to her sculpting. This balance brought a unique perspective: an awareness of the human body, graced with animation and movement as well as an appreciation of stone, rigid and unyielding, that can be transformed into soft and fluid lines. Art brings depth to Sue's life and provides a connection to her spiritual source.
In 2004, Sue moved to Whidbey Island drawn by it’s beauty and the wonderful community. She now sculpts full-time at her studio space in Freeland. She is represented by the Brackenwood Gallery in Langley and Open Door Gallery + Coffee at Bayview.
